Cooperative Learning Model
This paper discusses about Applying of Cooperative Learning in General Course. In this paper will explain one learning model only, it is Cooperative Learning. That will be divided into several categories include Numbered Heads Together (NHT), and Jigsaw. This learning model is increasing student’s cooperation and creates an independent student.
According to Indrawati and Setiawan (2009:27), learning model is a conceptual framework that describes a systematic procedure in organizing the learning experiences of learners to achieve specific learning goals and serve as guidelines for designers of learning and teachers in planning and implementing learning activities. This paper describes a learning model it is Cooperative Learning Model. According to Johnson in Hardian (1994), Cooperative learning is the instructional use of small groups through which students work together to maximize their own and each other’s learning. This learning model is suitable for the development of cooperation between students and teachers because these collaborative experiences engage students in an interactive approach to processing information, resulting in greater retention of subject matter, improved attitudes toward learning, and enhanced interpersonal relations among group members. Besides, learning model is intended that students are able to increase the sensitivity and social solidarity, and interpersonal relationships.
Cooperative learning model is suitable to be applied in learning process, especially NHT and Jigsaw. According to Herdian (2009), Cooperative learning of Numbered Heads Together is one type of cooperative learning, which emphasizes the special structure that is designed to influence the interaction patterns of students and has a goal to improve academic mastering. This pattern also applies to member of the group numbering which will answer the question. This type is beneficial for both teachers and students because this type prefers to cooperation and student’s activeness in any inquiry or problem solving. Every student is required to answer the questions, which is asked by teacher so the students can more understand the material. The application of this type when the allocation of time has determined by the syllabus is not sufficient so that by using this type will minimize the time.
Besides, Numbered Heads Together type, this paper also will explain the type of Jigsaw. According to Slavin in Hardian (2009), this jigsaw type structure should have the encouragement and cooperative tasks, thereby enabling to open the interaction between groups and relationships that are effective interdependence among group members. This type is often used by teachers in teaching-learning process in class, especially in speaking course. Students are divided into groups that would explain the same material with other group members, then each student back to the origin of group and explain the materials specifically. This jigsaw type is helpful to student’s skill in explaining the materials because: first, it increases the sense of individual responsibility. It makes each student responsible for the tasks that they have and forcing students to present the material by themselves. Second, it gives an opportunity for telling their opinions. Third, it trains communication skills.
Thus, this paper concludes that in teaching-learning process, the teacher should have a systematic concept of learning for the learning process goes smoothly. It is suitable for teacher to apply it into learning process. By using the Cooperative Learning models of type NHT and Jigsaw, students also are able to increase cooperation among groups and are able to become an independent student.
